HP Intelligent Provisioning Cant See USB Media?

KB ID 0001555

Problem

Life was simpler when we had DVD Drives and a wallet full of CD/DVDs! I was building an HP DL360 This morning and needed to install Windows. I created a bootable USB with Unetbootin and selected a Windows Server ISO, it wouldn’t boot. So I thought ‘Fine I’ll play the game” I pressed F10 for Intelligent Provisioning.

After selecting USB media – the system could not see my USB Drive?

After a couple of seconds head scrathing the penny dropped, it wants the iso not a bootable drive, (doofus!) So I used a FAT formatted USB and that didn’t work either?

Option 1: Use iLO

Before you all start emailing me, you can install an operating system from virtual media WITHOUT and advanced iLO licence! Annoyingly I was building the server on the bench, so I had to connect my laptop into the iLO with a crossover cable but, here’s me proving it works.

Option 2: Use ExFAT

Format your USB drive using ExFAT, luckily I use macOS and Disk Utility will format a drive using ExFAT for me.

Note: Windows will also format as ExFAT 🙂

Then simply put your install .iSO file(s) on the media.

Now you can see your install media.

Option 3: Use the HP Media Creator

I didn’t try this option, but feel free to download it and give it a try, comment below to let me know how you get on.

Certsrv: Can Only See User and Basic EFS

KB ID 0001552

Problem

When connected to the Web Enrolment portal (Certsrv) for your Certificate Services, you attempt to submit a certificate request. But you only see User and Basic EFS under Certificate Templates, like so;

Solution

I’ve done this myself many times, usually you are looking for the ‘Web Server‘ template and it’s not there, so we will use that as an example. Go to your CA Server.

Windows Server – Locate CA / Certificate Services

Administrative Tools > Certificate Services > Certificate template’s > Firstly make sure the template you are looking for is actually published! (i.e. is in the right hand window). Assuming it’s published, right click Certificate Templates > Manage.

Locate the template in question, Properties > Security > Grant the USER you are logged in, and attempting to submit the certificate request as, the READ and ENROL rights > Apply > OK.

Restart certificate services.

Allow a little time for Active directory replication, then try again.

AD Sites and Services: ‘Show Services Node’ Missing?

KB ID 0001448

Problem

While working on an old Exchange system this week I wanted to take a look at the ‘autodiscovery’ SCP in AD Sites and Services. Read any post, and you will se that you need to enable ‘Services Node View’ in AD sites and services. To do that you simply right click then go to View > Show Service Node. However, I didn’t get that option?

Solution

This was driving me crazy for a while, and it looks like it’s a bug in the Microsoft Management Console. If you look at the image (above) you will see Active Directory Sites and Services is selected (i.e. its blue). However it wasn’t when I ‘right clicked’.

You need to manually left click ‘Active Directory Sites and Services’ to select it.

Then once selected, right click, and then you get the correct menu.

Yes that’s annoyingly simple, and yes it took 20 minutes to find out what I was doing wrong!

Audacity: ‘Click Track’ Missing?

KB ID 0001426

Problem

While attempting to generate a ‘Click Track’ in Audacity, I could not find the option?

Solution

There are a couple of reasons why this can happen, firstly you don’t have the ‘Nyquist’ effect enabled, (Audacity > Preferences> Effects). But that wasn’t the case for me.

Open a Terminal window, and execute the following command;

[box]sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Audacity[/box]

Supply your password, and restart Audacity. It should now display.

Microsoft Office for Mac – Favorites Missing

KB ID 0001264

Problem

Whenever Office needs updating on my Mac I just hit OK and let it do its own thing. I did that this morning, and went and got a coffee. It was a while later that I noticed that when I needed to add an attachment to an email I got this;

Now that might look fine, but in the left hand pane ‘Favourites’ is missing, it should look like this;

If I opened launcher it was fine, it was only from Microsoft Office applications that I had a problem, e.g. If I opened Word and tried to open a document, it was also broken. For me this is a headache, to get to my ‘working’ folder I need to click down though about 10 layers of folders, which is OK once or twice, but VERY ANNOYING to do repeatedly all day!

Solution

In your Mac look in your home directory for the Library folder, (it’s hidden by default, so either enable viewing of hidden files, or press the Alt Key). Inside that folder there is another folder called preferences, and in there a file called com.apple.finder.plist take a copy of this file then delete it. At this point I restarted my Mac and everything was fixed.

Windows Server – Disk Performance Missing From Task Manager?

KB ID 0001203

Problem

If your machine is struggling, a good place to look first is the performance tab on ‘Task Manager’

Here you can see CPU and Memory Stats and how our network cards are performing, but wheres the disk stats?

Solution

Before you can see them you need to enable them, open a PowerShell, (or an administrative command window). and run the following command;

diskperf -y

Now re-open task manager and go to the performance tab and you can see the stats for the hard drives;

I can’t think why, but if you wanted to turn this off again issue the following command;

diskperf -n

Windows Server Enable the “Snipping Tool”

KB ID 0000383

Problem

The Windows Snipping Tool is not in the default build of Server 2008 R2, it’s part of the “Desktop Experience” feature.

In addition to SnippingTool.exe, this feature also enables, Windows Media Player, Desktop themes, Video for Windows (AVI support), Windows SideShow, Windows Defender, Disk Cleanup, Sync Center,Sound Recorder, Character Map, and the Windows Disc Image Burner.

Solution

Warning before you do this, when completed the server will reboot a few times as it configures the features, and pulls down updates. Plan in some downtime to carry out this procedure.

1. On the server > Open server Manager (ServerManager.msc) > Expand Feature > Add Features > Locate the Desktop Experience and select it.

2. When finished it will ask for a reboot, then reboot (quite a lot – I was worried it was in a reboot loop at one point).

3. When it comes back there’s your snipping tool.

Windows ‘ Error while installing WebDAV IIS Version 7.0 is required’

KB ID 0000293

Problem

I had this error in Windows Server 2008 R2, though you will see the same on Windows 7, you may assume you are running IIS 7, but you are actually running IIS 7.5.

Error: IIS Version 7.0 is required to use this product

Thankfully you don’t have to download another version of WebDAV you just need to enable it.

Solution

You need to enable WebDAV, it’s now a “feature”.

Windows 7 Enable WebDAV

1. Start > Run > appwiz.cpl {enter} > Turn Windows Features on or off> Expand World Wide Web Service > Expand Common HTTP Features > Select WebDAV Publishing > OK.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enable WebDAV

1. Launch Server Manager > Roles > Web Server (IIS) >Add Role Services > Below Common HTTP Features >Select WebDAV Publishing > Next > Install.

Then you can manage WebDAV Authoring rules in Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

KB ID 0000809

Problem

Whilst performing an upgrade from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011, I went on-site this morning to be told, “The new server does not have a NETLOGON share!”. As a result the clients who had authenticated to the old server had successfully ran their logon scripts. But the clients who had authenticated to the new server had not.

Solution

1. On the original (SBS 2003) server > Start > Run > cmd {Enter} > Run the following command;

[box]
net stop ntfrs
[/box]

2. On the original (SBS 2003) server > Start > Run > Regedit > Navigate to;

[box]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > NtFrs > Parameters > Backup > Restore > Process at Startup
[/box]

Change the Burflags DWORD value to D4 (Hexadecimal).

3. Then start the ntfrs service again.

[box]
net start ntfrs
[/box]

4. Now go to the NEW (SBS 2011) server > Start > Run > cmd {Enter} > Run the following command;

[box] net stop ntfrs [/box]

5. On the NEW (SBS 2011) server > Start > Run > Regedit > Navigate to;

[box]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > NtFrs > Parameters > Backup > Restore > Process at Startup
[/box]

Change the Burflags DWORD value to D2 (Hexadecimal).

6. Then start the ntfrs service again.
