Microsoft Teams: Suppress Annoying Message Pop-ups

KB ID 0001722

Problem

Wow! Who at Microsoft Teams thought that enabling that by default was a good idea? I was on a large conference call this morning, (about 150 people). Every message to the message feed was spewing onto my screen and making a noise during the meeting!

Thought: Why do ALL developers think it’s a good idea to have pop-up banner massages appear top right of the screen, (where your windows control buttons and things live), why not bottom right?

Anyway, I want them off completely, (if I want to read the messages I’ll open the message feed window!)

Microsoft Teams Notifications

Click your picture/Initials > Settings.

Chat > Edit.

Set as shown > Back to settings.

You may also want to alter, Notifications Section > Custom.

I’ve disabled ‘Banner’ for EVERYTHING and set them to only show in the feed.

Install the Office 2016 & 2013 GPO Templates

KB ID 0001095

Problem

I deployed a Remote Desktop Services server today, and when I logged on with my test users I fired up Office, and got the welcome movie.

Thats going to annoy my client so I need to stop that happening. Yes I know its pretty straight forward but I’m not a 64 year old typist called Marjorie.

Solution

Note: This ia a ‘User’ Policy so you may need to enable ‘loopback processing’.

1. I’m going to use Group Policy to do this, Server does not come withe the Office 2013 administrative templates so you need to download them (links below.) Copy all the .admx files to %systemroot%PolicyDefinitions

Office 2013 Templates Download

Office 2016 Templates Download

2. Copy all the .adml files to %systemroot%PolicyDefinitionsen-US, (or your own locale folder if your not English).

Now you can create a new group policy, (or edit an existing one). [box]User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Policy definitions > Microsoft Office 2013 > First Run[/box] Locate and Enable the following two policies;

  • Disable First Run Movie
  • Disable Office First Run on application boot

Stop ‘Open File – Security Warning’

KB ID 0000804

Problem

I put in a Remote Desktop Services Server this week, and every time the users launched their line of business app,

Open File - Security Warning
The publisher of this file can not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software.
Name: {Application name}
Publisher: Unknown Publisher
Type: Application
From: {PathApplication name}
This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run
software from publishers you trust.

Solution

OK the program is not digitally signed, but this is going to annoy the client even more, I need to suppress this warning.

1. Open the local group policy editor on the machine in question. (Start > Run > gpedit.msc {enter}).

2. Navigate to;

[box]
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer
[/box]

3. Locate the ‘Turn off the Security Settings Check feature’ > Set it to enabled.

Outlook – Disable Desktop Notifications

KB ID 0000901

Problem

Outlook will (by default), display a notification on your screen when you receive an email. Generally this is a good thing, but if (like me) your Outlook collects your personal mail as well, then you might not want these notifications flashing up on your screen.

Solution

1. From within Outlook > File > Options.

2. Mail > Untick ‘Display a Desktop Alert’.
