How to Convert .M4a Tracks to .Mp3

KB ID 0000908

Problem

I know M4a is essentially Mp4 anyway, but I have all my music in Mp3 format, and I can’t play an M4a file in my car!

Solution

Here I’m just converting one M4a file, but if you have a lot, the procedure is exactly the same.

1. Place your M4a file(s) in a folder > Open iTunes > File > Add Folder to Library > Navigate to your folder and select it.

2. File > Preferences > Import Settings > Select MP3 Encoder > (You will notice I’ve turned up the encoder settings for better quality) > OK > OK.

3. Search for the track(s) you have imported > Right Click > Create MP3 Version.

4. It will take a little while to convert. when it’s finished you will see two copies of your track(s). One will be the original M4a track and the other will be the new Mp3 version. At this point you can delete the M4a files(s) if you no longer require them.

iPhone – Bluetooth Problem

KB ID 0000374

Problem

I wrote an article yesterday about tethering via bluetooth, and had a few problems, sorry to say the web was not much help at all 🙁

Basically the iPhone was marked with a yellow warning triangle, and when clicking the troubleshooting option you see the following,

Error: Bluetooth Peripheral Device doesn’t have a driver.

2. I read some forum posts and the general advice was to download iTunes, extract the driver msi out of it and use those drivers, but that didn’t work either.

Error: Bluetooth Peripheral Device – No driver found.

Solution

The reason this is happening, is by default your iPhone installs with the “Wireless iAP” Service enabled. Click Start > Devices and Printers >Locate your iPhone > Right click > Properties > Services > Untick Wireless iAP > Apply > OK.

Note: You can still use the phone as an internet access point.

KB ID 0000474

Problem

You have an Apple device and you would like to create a remote VPN connection to a Cisco device running AnyConnect.

Note: This is not a walkthrough on how to configure AnyConnect, for that go here.

Be aware that in addition to your SSL VPN licences your Cisco ASA device also needs a “AnyConnect Mobile – ASA 5510” license. If not you will receive this error.

Solution

1. Firstly you need to download and install the Cisco AnyConnect client from iTunes.

2. Once installed launch the AnyConnect client software.

3. As this is the first time we have launched it we need to configure a connection, select “Add VPN Connection”.

4. Give the connection a name, and enter either public IP of your Cisco Device (Or its public name) > Save.

5. Slide the button from Off to On.

6. If you are using a “Self signed” certificate on the Cisco device you will see this warning, simply click continue.

7. Depending on how your authentication is setup, supply your username and password > Connect.

8. All being well, the client should say connected. (If you get a licensing error see here).

9. You are now connected to your corporate network, all the while you are connected you will see the VPN icon at the top of the screen.

Sync Your iPhone / iPad Wirelessly

KB ID 0000550

Problem

To sync your device wirelessly you need to make sure that,

1. You device is running IOS 5 or newer.

2. Your iTunes version is 10.5 or newer.

3. The iPhone / iPad are on the same wireless network as the machine running iTunes.

Solution

1. Start up iTunes and connect your device via its USB cable.

2. Select your device > on the summary page, scroll down to the options section > tick “Sync with this iPhone / iPad over Wi-Fi“.

3. Now whenever the device is on the same wireless network, iTunes will list it, and you can sync your device.

Update for iTunes 11 and Devices Running IOS6

In iTunes 11 you still need to tick the “Sync with this iPhone / iPad over Wi-Fi” option. Then on the device > Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync > Sync Now.

Note: If Sync Now is greyed out, (cannot be selected), then disable/re-enable wireless on the PC/Laptop and ensure the iPhone/iPad is connected to the same wireless network.

iPhone Playlist in the “Wrong Order”

KB ID 0000563

Problem

For a company that prides itself on image, and employs people just to work out their products “Unboxing Experience”. You would think that they could come up with a piece of software that wasn’t complete and utter tripe! But unfortunately we are stuck with iTunes.

All I wanted, was to have my “Gym Playlist” on my phone to be in the same order as it was in iTunes, it would seem that simply sorting by “Playlist Order” then syncing my phone is far “To Crazy!”

Solution

The solution is about as annoying as iTunes, and surprisingly makes less sense?

1. Open your playlist on your phone and play a song.

2. Tap the album cover and the “Shuffle and Repeat” options will drop down.

3. Make sure the shuffle icon is blue, if its grey tap it, then you can stop playing music, and your playlist is in the right order?

Getting iTunes to Sync to Your Music Folder

KB ID 0000652

Problem

Lovers of iTunes will say, just put your new music in the “Automatically Add to iTunes” folder,

Automatically Add to iTunesFolder Location

MAC OSX Music iTunes iTunes Media Automatically Add to iTunes

Windows: C:Users{user name}MusiciTunesiTunes MediaAutomatically Add to iTunes

Well that’s great, but I like to keep my music organised by artist alphabetically. I also like to organise things myself. What if you want to download some mp3 tracks from a source other than the iTunes store! Or you have torrented down some (completely legal) tracks you want to add to your music collection? Or I have TONS of music I want to add, and I want to keep that on my USB drive, what then?

Why can’t there simply be a button to “re-sync” your music from your folders? Because as usual if you don’t do things the “Apple Way” then tough, they are not interested.

Solution

1. Download and install the free application iTunes Library Updater

2. You might struggle to find it once its installed! Open Windows explorer and navigate to c:Program files (x86)iTunes Library Updater and run the ITLUgui.exe file. (If you plan on using this a log I’d right click it, and select send to Desktop (create shortcut). Add in your folder(s) and select Start.

3. To Automate: Edit the batch file that comes with the software (iTLU.bat), by opening it in notepad, and change the folder path from mine to yours.

4. Then to sync, simply run the batch file.
