Arcserve – Backup a ‘Mapped Drive / UNC Path”

KB ID 0001165

Problem

It’s been such a long time since I touched any backup software, I setup Arcserve UDP this week for a  client to backup their servers to a NAS drive, then they wanted to back that data off to tape for an offsite backup.

I installed Arcserve no problem, it looks much the same as it did last time I used it. When I expanded the server-name only the local drives were shown, as I only had a basic licence adding the NAS drive was not an option.

Solution

A quick call to the boys in the data center who look after all our backups pointed me in the right direction. Instead of adding the mapped drive letter, you simply add the UNC path to the share as a “Preferred Shared/Machines” source.

ARCServe E8601 Failed to connect agent. error when restoring to Exchange

KB ID 0000161

Problem

Seen on ARCServe 11.5 (SP2) when doing a brick level restore of user data.

Error: E8601 Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=dbaxchg2, EC=Invalid user ID or password was submitted or
Database Server instance may be inaccessible. If user ID is a Windows domain account,
please use DomainUsername.)

Solution

Assuming you have the correct credentials set up in ARCserve server admin, and in the ARCServe Exchange agent, Attempt to re-run the restore job, at the final stage you will be presented with the “Session User Name and Password” dialog box. Select the job > Click Edit > Enter the credentials as DOMAINNAMEusername with the correct password > OK.

Then select the DBAgent tab, and do the same on there.

The Restore should now proceed.

ARCserve Error E8571 – (The request is denied by the agent. The requested agent is not installed)

KB ID 0000433

Problem

Seen when trying to perform a “Document Level” backup of Exchange 2010.

Error E8571 The request is denied by the agent. The requested agent is not installed

Solution

The crux of the problem is the Exchange server needs the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects installing upon it, and they HAVE TO BE INSTALLED BEFORE the backup agent.

1. On the Exchange server, Start > appwiz.cpl {enter}

2. Locate and un-install CA ARCServe Backup.

3. Download and install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects.

4. Reinstall the “Backup Agent for Exchange” and your backups should now run without the error above.

CA ARCserve Error W3831

Problem

Seen on CA Arcserve 11.1

Backup fails with the following error:

W3831
Unable to find any media that can be used in this job.
Backup Operation Failed.

Solution

There’s probably a few reasons for this error, in my case the fix was alarmingly simple.

1. Select Devices and locate your tape drive. (notice mine says <Offline>).

2. Simply right click the drive and bring it back “Online”.

ARCserve – Addling Licences

KB ID 0000444

Problem

Normally you can just add licenses from Help > About CA ARCserve Backup > Add/View Licences.

However you may find that you cannot enter a “Backup Suite” Licence code/Activation key.

Solution

1. To do this you need to locate the “CALicnse.exe” file and run it.

2. This tool will let you enter the correct licenses.

Note: Depending on ARCserve version the folder location may vary.
