Recover Browser Passwords

Recover Browser Passwords KB ID 0001885

Problem

I use quite a lot of browsers, I use Microsoft Edge for work, Firefox for personal browsing, Opera when I need VPN protected browsing, and occasionally I also use Safari and Chrome.

All modern browsers will store usernames and password for you, but when you get a new device or start using a new browser, you may need to go and recover browser passwords (and possibly usernames) from your other browsers.

Disclaimer :I’m not a numpty, these are not my real usernames and passwords folks!

SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION

SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION KB ID 0001856

Problem

I get it, older versions of TLS and SSL are insecure and we should not be using them. However I needed to get on an HPE Server iLO management interface last week and I

was met with this.

Firefox Error: SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION
Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and Opera Error: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
Microsoft Internet Explorer Error:
This might be because the site uses outdated or unsafe TLS security settings. If this keeps happening, try contacting the website’s owner. Your TLS security settings aren’t set to the defaults, which could also be causing this error.

Firefox Solution : SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION

I advise you just do this to get to the page you need to and set it back afterwards. In your browser windows enter about:config, Type TLS into the search bar and locate security.tls.version.min and change its value to 1, Then tick to save.

And now, I can get to where I want to go.

IE Solution : SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION

Yeah, I know Internet Explorer is supposed to be dead, but it’s still there and you can utilise it to solve this problem, from your internet options in IE > Advanced  > you can then enable TLS 1.1. and 1.2.

You will still get a warning but now you can click past it.

OVA / OVF Deployment Gets Stuck ‘Validating’

KB ID 0001664

Problem

I had this problem (on sphere 6.7) the other day when trying to deploy some OVA files on my test network.

Solution

Well as stated elsewhere I tried reconnecting to my vCenter using its FQDN, this didn’t solve the problem, using Flash or HTML5 didn’t cure the problem either. What did cure the problem was using a different browser! I switched from IE to Chrome and it worked fine.

Update: I Also cured this problem by using Microsoft Edge (The new chromium based one).

Chrome Browser – Show Sites SSL / HTTPS Certificate?

KB ID 0001300

Problem

I used to use Chrome all the time back in the dark ages before I saw the light and bought a mac. Since then I’ve persevered with Safari and never felt the need to go back.

This afternoon someone in the office asked, ‘How do you see site certificates in Chrome?’ Which I thought was a little odd as it’s easy to do in IE, Firefox, and Safari. So I jumped on a remote machine for a look. Sure enough it’s well hidden?

Solution

With the site loaded  > {Three Dots} or Ellipses  > More Tools > Developer Tools.

Security Tab (might be hidden, use the ‘more’ arrows) > View Certificate.

Google Chrome – Cannot play embedded .wmw or .mpg/.mpeg

KB ID 0000184

Problem

I’m a big fan of Google Chrome, i’ts fast, and clean, and it does exactly what it says on the tin! I had noticed, I had a problem playing embedded video though.

As I use this format on PeteNetLive it was my only gripe, (well that and syncing bookmarks, but I cured that with Xmarks). Took me a bit of searching but I got it fixed in the end.

Solution

1. Download THIS (Yes I know it says Firefox – trust me!).

2. Close all your browser windows.

3. Run the file you downloaded above.

4. Now you can play embedded video.

KB ID 0000326

A recent update of Chrome (in my case to 6.0.472.59), turned off AutoFill, I use autofill to remember information for web forms a lot, so because I’m lazy I wanted it turned back on again.

1. From with Chrome, Click the “Spanner” / “Customise and Control Google Chrome” Icon > Options.

2. Select the “Personal Stuff” tab > Form autofill section > AutoFill options.

3. Tick “Enable AutoFill to fill in web forms with a single click” > Close > Close.

Google Chrome – Can’t Open jnlp (Java) files

KB ID 0000354

Problem

It’s annoying but for some reason Google Chrome simply downloads .jnlp files rather than opening and launching the Java applications. You would think that associating .jnlp files so that they open in Chrome would fix the problem, but it does not.

Solution

1. Go to the link that you are trying to launch the Java application from, and Chrome will download it, as before.

2. By default Chrome will list the download on the bottom of the page, and to the right of the filename is a small drop down arrow, click it.

3. From the menu that pops up select “Always open files of this type”.

Chrome (Linux) Installing x64 bit Flash Plugin

KB ID 0000385

Problem

Did you know you can install Java and Flash with the Ubuntu Restricted extras pack? click here

At the time of writing, Adobe have pulled the previous beta of x64 bit flash for Chrome, which is annoying because I am running it on my x64 Ubuntu 10.10 box.

Solution

To be honest more of a workaround than a solution, but you can get chrome to install the x32 bit version and it will run it as a separate process.

1. Launch a terminal Session (Applications > Accessories > Terminal), issue the following command followed by your password.

[box]sudo apt-get install chromium-browser flashplugin-installer[/box]

2. When prompted enter “Y” for yes.

3. Time to put the kettle on.

4. When its finished, open up Chrome and go here to test it.
