Set Up the VMware View 5 (and Horizon View) Event Database

Problem

Below I’ll configure SQL 2008 R2, insofar as I will setup a new database for the View Events, create a user for that database, then finally connect the View 5 Horizon View Connection Server to that database.

Solution

1. Firstly, I’m assuming you have a SQL Server setup and ready to create database on, If you do not rather than reinvent the when follow my instructions in the article below.

Note: Complete ONLY Steps 1 to 6 then return here.

2. Login to the SQL Management Studio > Databases > New Database.

3. Call it View5Events (Note: You can call it ‘Aunty Mary’s Canary’ if you want to).

4. Options section > change the recovery mode to ‘Simple’ > OK.

5. Expand Security > Logins > New Login.

6. Give the user a name i.e. view5events > Tick ‘SQL Authentication’ > Type and re-type a password > Untick ‘Enforce password policy’.

7. User Mapping tab > Tick the View5Events Database > Tick db_owner > OK > Close the SQL Management Studio.

8. Login to the Connection Server (Flash Required) > View Configuration > Event Configuration > Edit,

Database Server: The name of the Server Running SQL.
Port: 1433 (Standard SQL Port make sure it it NOT blocked by a firewall).
Database Name: View5Events
User name: view5events
Password: {You set above}
Table prefix: _vdi

9. To see if it is working > Monitoring > Events > (It may be empty for a while don’t panic).

SQL Install Error “SQL Server Browser Service Group Does Not Exist”

Problem

Seen when reinstalling SQL 2008 R2 on a domain controller. Note: as a background the SQL Server was installed previously and then the server was promoted to a domain controller. Then when the attempt to reinstall SQL was carried out this happened:

The following error has occurred.
SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check for earlier failures in the setup

Note: Yes thats a typo, but there is a typo in the error message.

Solution

1. You need to create the group(s) manually, logon to a domain controller > Windows Key+R (to run) > type ‘dsa.msc’ > Enter.

2. Create two Windows security groups called;

SQLServer2008SQLBrowserUser${ServerName}
SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser${ServerName}

3. Retry the install.

SQL Sever 2012 Setup Error – Rule ‘Setup Account Privileges’ Failed

Problem

When trying to install SQL Server 2012 (Standard c/w SP2). This popped up;

Rule Check Result
Rule "Setup account privileges" failed.
The account that is running SQL Server Setup does not have one or all of the following rights: the right to back up files and directories, the right to manage auditing and the security log and the right to debug programs. To continue, use an account with both of these rights. For more information, see

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813847.aspx.

As I was logged in as the domain administrator, (yeah I know, but it’s my test network). I was confused.

Solution

1. Well, it turns out I don’t have those rights after all so lets grant them, Windows Key+R > Control admintools {Enter}.

2. Launch ‘Local Security Policy’.

3. Navigate to Security Settings >Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Back up files and directories > Add in the user that’s being denied > Apply > OK.

4. In the same location locate ‘Manage auditing and security log’ > Add in the user that’s being denied > Apply > OK.

5. In the same location locate ‘Debug programs’ > Add in the user that’s being denied > Apply > OK.

6. Now try again, (remember if you added a group, you will need to log off and back on again.)
