Dropbox – Windows, Linux, Apple and Dropbox Portable (USB) Installation

KB ID 0000409

Problem

You would like to sync your files/folders between more than one machine? Dropbox, is a service that lets you keep files in “The Cloud” and synchronise them across multiple machines and platforms. It’s one of those things that once you start to use it you wonder what you did before you had it. Simply put it’s like having a USB drive that you don’t need to carry around with you, and even if you still carry your USB drive, you can run Dropbox portable on that as well.

iPhone Playlist in the “Wrong Order”

KB ID 0000563

Problem

For a company that prides itself on image, and employs people just to work out their products “Unboxing Experience”. You would think that they could come up with a piece of software that wasn’t complete and utter tripe! But unfortunately we are stuck with iTunes.

All I wanted, was to have my “Gym Playlist” on my phone to be in the same order as it was in iTunes, it would seem that simply sorting by “Playlist Order” then syncing my phone is far “To Crazy!”

Solution

The solution is about as annoying as iTunes, and surprisingly makes less sense?

1. Open your playlist on your phone and play a song.

2. Tap the album cover and the “Shuffle and Repeat” options will drop down.

3. Make sure the shuffle icon is blue, if its grey tap it, then you can stop playing music, and your playlist is in the right order?

iPhone Lockscreen – Camera Icon Stopped Working ?

KB ID 0000595

Problem

A while ago Apple put a shortcut to the camera on the iPhone’s “Lock Screen” that you could access by quickly pressing the home button twice, (you can also access the iPod controls this way). Then you can use your “volume up” button to fire the camera shutter.

This is a good feature if (like me) you have a PIN number on the phone and you need to take a photo in a hurry (e.g. a PC has just gone BSOD and you need to get the error message).

But for a while I’ve not been able to use this feature, If you press the camera icon it simply bounces up and down.

Solution

It turns out Apple have simply changed the way it operates. Press the home button twice (as before), but this time don’t press the camera icon “Tap and Sweep” it upwards.

Apple Device Stopped Sending Email – “Cannot Send Mail – A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The Recipient {name} was rejected by the server.”

KB ID 0000654

Problem

Yesterday I got a text message from my wife to say she could not sent me an email. When she tried this happened:

At first I thought it was just me, until I asked her to try sending an email to someone else, then she got the same result. Trying over 3G, and on the wireless at home, the results were the same.

It had been working fine, but had then suddenly stopped working. My own iPhone was happily talking to the same mail server so I was stumped for a while.

Solution

1. Even though it’s my email server, its hosted for me, so I could not guarantee nothing had changed at the other end. She could receive email but not send email.

Note: Most internet email services receive email using POP3 (which uses TCP port 110) and they send email using SMTP (which uses TCP port 25), so the symptoms of the problem (she cant send) are pointing to SMTP/TCP Port 25 not working or being blocked.

2. On your device open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Select the email account that has the problem > In the outgoing mail server section select the mail server.

3. Select the mail server again.

4. Make sure authentication is set to password, if not change it, also make sure the server port is set to 25 > Done.

Note: If you could send but not receive then you would do the same, but this time on the Incoming server, but the port number would be 110, (unless you are using SSL then it will be 995).
