Android Auto VPN KB ID 0001941
Problem
I use VPNs a lot in my day job, and maintain some of my own for getting onto my test network etc. But recently I purchased Nord VPN. I installed it on my Android phone, the same phone I have paired with my car, that starts playing my Spotify tunes within a minute or so of jumping in the car. At least until I jumped in my car post VPN install. My car threw an error I didnt capture. I correctly assumed it was the VPN. Because when I opened my phone I was greeted with this.
Android Auto Encountered an Error
Communication error 21 – Being connected to a VPN may prevent Android Auto from starting. If you’re using a VPN, turn it off and try reconnecting to Android Auto..
Solution : Android Auto VPN
In my day job, I know that if I need to ‘break’ traffic out of a VPN tunnel. that is done using ‘split tunnelling’ I wonder if Nord VPN can do this also? Turns out it can. Launch NordVPN and in the bottom right select you user profile button > then settings.
Split tuneling
Enable Split Tunnelling if it’s not already enabled, then I thought I’ll chance it and select Automatically exclude apps not compatible with VPN, rather than searching for Android Auto. It will ask you to reconnect, let it do so.
Now if you got back and select Manage Apps you will see Android Auto was auto selected. And all is working well back in the car (and the camper van!)
