Microsoft Edge (macOS) Migrate Bookmarks from Safari

KB ID 0001641

Problem

So now theres a version of Microsoft Edge for macOS! Normally I would not bother, but I spend a lot of time in SharePoint and Azure so I thought, rather than my usual approach of playing ‘Browser Roulette’ I’d try Microsoft Edge and see what it was like.

My usual browser of choice is Safari, but the install wizard defaults to wanting to import bookmarks / favourites* from Chrome. (I do also have Chrome, but I don’t use it often!)

*Note: Wow! Microsoft have spelled Favourites correctly for once!

So how to get my Safari Bookmarks?

Solution

Firstly Edge needs full disk access to get the bookmarks > Apple Logo > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access > ‘UNLOCK’ > Tick Microsoft edge.

Launch Edge > {ellipses} > Settings > Import Browser Data > Select ‘Safari’ > Import.

So now they are there, but they look like a ‘bag of spanners’ all my neat folders have been moved into another folder called ‘Imported from Safari”.

From ‘Manage Favourites’, you can drag everything to where you want it.

Microsoft Office for Mac – Favorites Missing

KB ID 0001264

Problem

Whenever Office needs updating on my Mac I just hit OK and let it do its own thing. I did that this morning, and went and got a coffee. It was a while later that I noticed that when I needed to add an attachment to an email I got this;

Now that might look fine, but in the left hand pane ‘Favourites’ is missing, it should look like this;

If I opened launcher it was fine, it was only from Microsoft Office applications that I had a problem, e.g. If I opened Word and tried to open a document, it was also broken. For me this is a headache, to get to my ‘working’ folder I need to click down though about 10 layers of folders, which is OK once or twice, but VERY ANNOYING to do repeatedly all day!

Solution

In your Mac look in your home directory for the Library folder, (it’s hidden by default, so either enable viewing of hidden files, or press the Alt Key). Inside that folder there is another folder called preferences, and in there a file called com.apple.finder.plist take a copy of this file then delete it. At this point I restarted my Mac and everything was fixed.

Windows – Change My Documents Location

KB ID 0000669

Problem

I like to keep ‘My Documents’, ‘My Pictures, ‘Favorites’, etc, in one location so I can sync and back them up. Like previous versions of Windows, Windows 8 likes to put all that information into C:/Users/{username}.

In Windows 7 you could just go from the Start Menu > {Username} and change the ‘Target’ or location, with Windows 8, there is no Start menu.

Solution

1. Launch Windows Explorer (Windows Key+E) > Navigate to C:\Users\{your-username}.

2. Locate the folder location you with to change > Right click > Properties.

3. Location tab > Change the location to the one you prefer > Apply.

Note: For Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, you will not see the ‘location’ option, you need to right click the folder under ‘This PC’, or from ‘Quick Access”.

4. Choose if you want to copy the docs from the existing location to the new location, I’ve just built this so I don’t want to, (if you have already saved work to these locations you might want to).
