Site figures for last year....

petenetlive stats 2011

petenetlive stats 2011

My first goal for last year was to get 1000 visitors a day, then 2000 a day by the end of the year. As you can see we trebled our unique visitors from Jan to Dec. A big thank you to all the visitors and supporters!

Re-Awarded the Microsoft MVP! Thanks to Claire, and all at Microsoft UK!!!!

Message: Just like to thank you for your guide Link

but would like to mark an addition.

the command
________________________________________________________________
Get-EmailAddressPolicy | where {$_.RecipientFilterType –eq "Legacy"} | Set-EmailAddressPolicy –IncludedRecipients AllRecipients
________________________________________________________________

did not work for me. I kept getting the error linked here

The answer was to go to the 2003 machine. Start Exchange 2003 ESM and open the Recipient Policies container, right-click the Default Policy and select Change property pages... . Click to remove the check mark next to Mailbox Manager Settings and press OK button.

After that I was able to run the command you noted and all went well.

Thanks for your article!!

Ash

Hi Ashley

Message: Hi Pete
Just a note to say thank you for the assistance provided through your video on how to set up the FTP Server on 2008 r2 and most importantly how to configure the firewall {link}.
I am an "amateur" Windows practitioner as I only so it to support the main aspects of my role.  Your video saved me from throwing may laptop out of the window in complete frustration.

Thanks Guy :)

"Happy Birthday to me!" Removed the ligit search function from the site today, it was slowing down the page loading times. You will have noticed the new "bumpbar" at the bottom of the page, all site searching can now be done from there!

Another nice email...

Message: Pete,

I stumbled upon your site today after hours and hours of looking for ASDM tutorials. I wanted to perform some intricate operations with NAT/PAT and nothing seemed to work. The way you explained your CLI commands gave me the knowledge I needed to simply bypass the ASDM interface and do everything I needed from CLI. I will be donating to your website and it will be one my main resources for Cisco information and help. Thanks so much.

Got a nice email this morning...

20 Jun 11

I've spent five solid days recording all the solution pages, essentially the data in the articles is now NOT linked to the site it just sits in front of it, so I can change the site without harming the data :)

Got a nice email this morning...

Pete: during 3 days I made a migration from Exchange 2003 to 2010. After looking and looking many instructions on Internet I found your instructions and you know what?  I did !! I just want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

Marching toward the 500 article milestone, thanks to everyone for their support and emails, put the +1 Google buttons on the site this week, I don't know if they will take off but please feel free to hit the buttons.

Pete,
I just sent you some money via my paypal account.  Thanks so much for the easy step by step to make a VPN happen on Server 2008.  I read so much acronym garbage until I found your site!  My needs very exactly like yours and it all worked in 30 minutes what I thought was gonna kill hours of my day!

(Server 2008 VPN setup)  BTW

You are a good man!

Message: Dear sir,

i was very happy to find this article.

your article is very detailed and very well written, the images, the notes, everything is just easy and simple. i must be honest and say that if i had the time, i`d make such a site for everything i ever made (i.e. upgrading DC 2003 to 2008 ..etc). thank you very much, you are great ! this might not sound well but its true - if i had the money to spend, i am 100% positive i would have donated as much as i could. i do promise that if in the future i will be earning more, you are definitely my first donation! thank you again !

Message: Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks for the article on connecting a Cisco ASA and a SonicWALL via IPSEC VPN. I'd been fiddling with it off and on for a few days with no success, but your video (KB/Article/0000357.htm) put me on the right track. Thanks!

Amit Parghi

Glad to help Amit - Not a platform I use a great deal, so I'm glad someone got the benefit. (PL)

Message: Pete,

Jam up write up on migration from 2007 to 2010 Exchange. It is the best write up I have seen of exactly which prerequisites need to be installed on 2008 server. I have not got them all on the 1st try with scripts & did with your screen shots. Got Exchange installed 1st try without having to go down load something! Atta boy. I would suggest that this "how to" will also work on 07 to 07.

Your description of the Public Folder replication is great also.

All the best!

18 February 11

Today article 400 went online!! The last few months have seen a major upturn in site traffic, It was only this time last year I started looking at the site traffic.

I look at the stats everyday, and just to wind me up they are hovering "Just underneath" a thousand visitors a day. Hopefully by the next time I post back here I will have broken that barrier.

And with donations and ad revenue, we are actually turning a small profit! So please keep clicking, and posting links to the site, as usual if you want to reproduce any information from PNL please provide a link back to the original article.

26 January 11

Man its been five months since I stopped by and posted a note - sorry! What have I been up to in the mean time? Well regular visitors will know that content is still being added on a steady basis, today article 383 went online, so it won't be long before we pass the 400 mark. Site traffic is growing steadily, so much my hosting company took me down for a few hours for causing their other client's to run slow :) The site regularly gets 500-700 new visitors a day.

As of the 1st Jan I was re-awarded the MVP :) Thanks to Claire and the guys down in Reading, for the award, and the two days they took care of me in November.

Don't forget to visit the PNL channel on You Tube!

11 August 10

Well acceleration of articles is still going well, we passed 300 a while back, and despite months of me trying to get over 300 hits in one day, we are now touching 500 hits a day. Thanks for all the emails and questions, I do try to reply to everyone please do not be offended if I don't get back to you.

My aim this month is to get some video stuff up onto YouTube so watch this space.

05 May 10

I finally lost my patience with the old site search so I've added one from ligit. The speed at which we've gone from 200 articles to nearly 250 is alarming! Still the extra content has driven up site traffic form about 110 new visits to 170 new visits a day.

I've been adding (when I can remember!) content to the Facebook fan page please go and have a look.

19 Apr 10

Since we went "Hosted" the new site search has been added, so we no longer rely on Google, the main page has been re-written and a stack of extra stuff added, I'm getting a trickle of Twitter followers, so please join in :)

If anyone has some cool stuff, or hard to find fixes they want me to post - then please let me know.

07 Apr 10

Yesterday was a big day for the site, I finally bit the bullet and had it hosted, so it no longer is running under my desk :) A big thanks to the tech dept at no-ip for the near instantaneous DNS switch over, don't think anyone saw any downtime. Post swap over there are a few niggles that I'm working though.

18 Mar 10

Lots of stuff has been changing, I've been playing with Photoshop so we have a new logo, and the site header has changed. A couple of weeks back we went past 200 articles in the knowledge base. Thanks to Google Analytics I'm getting some good stats on what's getting hit and how often.

01 Mar 10

Since the re-write I've uploaded a lot of stuff, the language conversion option has been added to every page, and we are now on Twitter (please follow us, all new articles are tweeted). I do try to get at least one new article up a day (work and family permitting).

31 Dec 09

Well since the site re-write last month, there's been a ton of articles and stuff uploaded, with the new format its easy for me to publish articles as I hit problems and find solutions. Thanks to all who made a donation to the site in 2009 and thanks to all the emails sent in, where possible I've replied to everyone. Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous 2010!!

11 Nov 09

Firstly apologies - If you have any pages book marked, the URL may well have changed, I've completely re-written the site from the ground up. Like any entity that has evolved over time, the layout looked like a bag of spanners and needed sorting out. The site started as a place for me to stick odd articles and tutorials, but over the last year has developed into more of a database/knowledge base of articles, So I've rolled all the older articles into the database format, linked the whole thing back to some cascading style sheets, so hopefully everything looks a little more uniform. That being said please let me know if there are any broken links or something does not render properly.

24 Jun 09

Well the Techbin got far too unwieldy, so I've rolled everything on the techmain page - all the back end links are the same, (just in case you book marked anything :) Stuffs going up steadily and the sites got better band witch now (50Mb).

13 Oct 08

Never have I done so much work on the site! it seems not a day passes without me scribbling something down to publish on the site, I've done a ton of Hyper-V stuff over the last week. And stuff is getting dumped into the TechBin on a regular basis Plus my usual Cisco Stuff The home page has been cut down so it just links out to the other parts of the site, and I've dropped a few donation buttons onto the site in case anyone feels generous.

08 Sep 08

Started the Bargain Bin section today, There's a ton of other stuff trickling onto the site, done a fair amount of Cisco ASA stuff (Web VPN and Setup etc ) .

26 Jun 08

The Tech Main Page was re-done today to make it easier for me to put new stuff on it, I've put up an article covering ever thing about domain time problems that I've amassed, as a sort of "Fix All" for a lot of Event ID's. Also put up some info on creating a Virtual PIX firewall for your test bench :)

04 Mar 08

Occasional work done on the site - Upgraded my home server to 2008 and Exchange 2007 so I've been playing with Hyper visor and getting more experience with exchange, which was fun to get running with my domain provider SEE HERE. I've also been off on a VM Ware course so I will have another Exam to sit, I'm in the middle of studying for 70-620 so if anyone has any advice on the test it would be appreciated.

01 Dec 07

The "Trade Lull" before Christmas is on us all in technical land :( Over the last few months I've been decommissioning old Symantec Firewall's for our clients and replacing them with new ones (Mostly Cisco ASA's) but I thought if I'm doing that then so are a lot of other people, so there's a glut of small Symantec firewall's kicking about. So if you want one get on eBay and start searching to Bag Yourself a Cheap Firewall. Special thanks to Andrew Dorrian for the Client to gateway stuff on the Symantec FW200 page :)

The Event ID page was getting hidden at the back of the site so I've linked it off the main page, and I've been steadily doing some small bits on the site and uploading Event Errors and stuff.

13 Oct 07

I was at a Microsoft Technet event the other week, and while the thing was based aground Virtual Server the guys were using quite a bit of "Windows Deployment Services" which looked quite a good piece of kit. A week or so later one of our clients was asking me about imaging PC's and being a Symantec Reseller I naturally mentioned "Ghost" - Now I've used Ghost for years for imaging, mass rollouts, and even backing up PC's and problems I've had in the past were cured by my colleague Allen installing RIS, and using that to make Ghost work with bothersome network cards (do a Google search for Broadcom and Ghost wont work).

Now with WDS at the client site, the "work around" we used to use didn't work, so I said I would run WDS up on the test bench and take a look at it. Now I've not touched "Microsoft's imaging stuff" since RIS and only then because it was NEW while I was studying for the 2000 Server exam, so there were loads of questions on it. But it looked like an unwieldy beast so I stuck with Ghost. But WDS is an all together better solution and if you want to take a peek read my walk through here.

30 Aug 07

I've been steadily putting tech stuff up for the last couple of months, the tech main page had started to swell up a bit so I broke it up a little to make it easier to navigate round. I've finally got round to putting in a temporary firewall at home to free up my PIX, so I will probably do a raft of PIX500 stuff over the coming weeks, then I can put it back and concentrate on the newer stuff. I've got a head full of Symantec Hardware firewall stuff as well so If anyone want's I can publish some stuff on that too, just drop me a mail.

17 Jul 07

Exam all done and passed, I've finally got round to writing down how to deploy 3cdeamon, an app I use all the time, to get the benefit yourself CLICK HERE to see how to use it for backing up your Cisco firewall's, CLICK HERE

13 May 07

First week back after the course, which went well, down at the Comstor I will get round to doing the exam in the next couple of weeks (work permitting) put some USB Encryption stuff up today. I've been a bit scarce on EE this month cause I've had a lot on, hopefully things will quiet down after the exam :)

31 Mar 07

All the ASA Stuff I've done so far is up, there's some ASDM and CLI configs here, and here for example, the Exchange Relay stuff is uploaded. My "Loan ASA" Goes back next week so I'm unsure how much more I will get done. Well at the end of next month I'm off to do my SNPA Course so I might get some more stuff published soon.

25 Mar 07

I've a fair amount of updates on the site over the past few weeks, Stuck some ISA info up, and will get some info up on the Cisco ASA when I've had it proof read by Tanya :) There's some "Open Relay & Exchange" stuff to upload too so watch this space.

30 Jan 07

The door opened and closed for Rogues admissions here at PNL some more stuff has been dropped into the Event ID section.

12 Jan 07

I've not updated this page for a while - but I've been doing some odds and ends on the site over the past few months :) I've started running Vista and Office 2007 on my work Laptop in an effort to get "Up to Speed" with it before my clients start using it - so you will see a trickle of Vista stuff like this and this popping up over the next few months.

Another year and I've been lucky enough to be re-awarded the MVP for "Windows Server - Networking" Thanks to the good folks at Microsoft (Special Mention for Lorna and Akim :)

08 Apr 06

Done a ton of work on the site today uploaded a walk through on the use of Exmerge. And how to use dcpromo with the adv switch HERE. Converted the rogues section to ASP and put some page counters on there. Overhauled the techmain page and put up the links for the Event ID section I started a while ago.

With all the recent works some links might have stopped so I'd be grateful if you come across a dead link if you would Email me and let me know.

03 Mar 06

Been a while since I put anything on the notes page, I've been doing odds and ends on the site over the past year - but nothing too stunning :( Cause I've been changing jobs and studying a lot, I've finally got my my backside in gear and started finishing of my MCSE, you can keep up with my progress Here.

I've also decided to start putting some Event ID stuff on the site cause I'm sick and tired of researching a particular problem - and sifting through pages of junk before I find a FIX - watch The Technical Section.

09 Apr 05

Updated the Downloads page with a bit more stuff and put some graphics on it - as it was starting to look a bit Dull.

20 Jan 05

I haven't updated this page in an age but I've done some sporadic work on the site in the past few months, the rogues page has been added to and I'm in the process of trying to present it a little better, (sorry for the wait) I'm moving the Longhorn link from the main page cause its said "New" for far too long

19 Aug 04

After dropping files on my web site willy-nilly for a number of posters at EE I decided I'd better create a download section to drop stuff in, as I'm loathed to give public access to the secure section of the site - there's just the 2K adminpak in there at the minute, if there's any "difficult to find" files that I can drop in there (Legally!) let me know. DOWNLOADS

24 Jul 04

Been very lazy on the site (sorry) I've had a lot on, for those Experts waiting for the Rogues Gallery update its now been done :) PL

06 Jun 04

Done a lot of work in the past few days on the Rogues Gallery Put the Symantec live AV feed on the main tech page today, (Saw it on Kyle's site and had to steal it :)

22 May 04

Uploaded the Windows Password Recovery page yesterday, and spent a lot of time going through the site and updating the page titles, in an effort to get some better cataloguing on Google. I put manual links in on the Tech Main page, cause I think the java menu is confusing the search bots.

A big ThanQ to dorward, seanpowell , Daydreams and everyone who helped out here, for those of you who have book marked the Home Page you will see we are "Icon-ed"

09 May 04

Domain name is now working fine, and we are indexed by Google. Rehashed the Browser Hijack page and uploaded the "Outlook blocking attachments" page.

02 May 04

Finally got round to registering www.petenetlive.com though it's gonna take 24-72 hours for the update to filter down to everyone.

11 April 04

Well, this sites been up for about a month and I've done zip on it in that time, Despite some good feedback and ideas from a few good folks from EE. As its bank holiday weekend, I've set some time aside to get some work done on the site. Updated the news ticker on the front page, the links page, as well as building this area for me to jot down some stuff in.

I'd like to thank for following for their help,

Marcel Brugmans: For providing the secure section and logon stuff, and for his patience while I tried to get my head round the asp.

Jess Porter: No I've not been ignoring the Emails, I've been so busy on EE that I've not been here to do any updates for a while, your suggestions are now included on the links page.

Luc and Ashwin (aka LucF and Sunray_2003) Thanks for the input, I've repaired the broken links (The info was ported across from the old website) Not sure If I'm going to change the links from the main page though, hyperlinking the text makes it look odd.

What's in the Pipeline: Those of you who know me, will know some thieving scrote broke into my server room and stole all my tools :( As I've now got to dance through hoops naked to get my insurance company to replace the things, and a good article I once read at Toms Hardware, I'm going to write up "What I think" Tech's should be carrying around with them. I'll get it up in the Tech Info section when its done.

Once in the Lounge (at EE) another Expert commented that (with the exception of the page editors) No one knows what anyone looks like? If enough people are interested I'll post a "Rogues Gallery" here. Let me know if your interested. PL
